SmartControl universal remote control aims to take the pain out of entering product codes

Universal remote controls come promising minimal handset juggling when turning on more than one piece of AV equipment at a time. But setting them up isn't always straightforward for novice users or sometimes even pros. One For All thinks it has an answer in the form of the Smart Control, a budget priced remote that puts less emphasis on trawling through lists of product codes to gain control of your kit.

Absolute Gadget

If there is one thing that upsets the missus it is remote control sprawl. There are a lot of the type "one remote to control them all" but for one reason or another the fail to live up to expectations. One for All hopes that its Xsight Touch will put paid to those fears. Most households will testify that once you get yourself a decent telly, a DVD/Blu-ray player, an amp, etc. you soon have have more plastic floating around your room than Jordan.

One for All Xsight Touch remote control

One For All has been making 'universal' remote controls for years, but recently it has released two high-end models, the Xsight Colour, which we looked at recently and the Xsight Touch.

The Touch has a touch-sensitive screen, similar to that on the excellent Logitech Harmony 1100. But while the Harmony costs nearly £300 the Touch costs a more reasonable £130. It has lots of physical buttons but there's also a small touch-sensitive colour screen at the top of the device. This is content-sensitive, which is to say that what's on it changes depending on what you're doing. Setting it up required installing some software on our computer. Instead of supplying a CD the company requires users to download this from the internet, but it was no trouble.

The big selling point of the SmartControl is a system called SimpleSet. SimpleSet lets you program the remote with 3 button presses. Essentially it uses the same quick programming option that previous One For All remotes have used and it works across major brands.

One For All's Smart Control wants to persuade you that you've had it wrong -- universal remotes can be easy to use. Make no mistake, they're a truly great idea and offer features that are worth ditching your existing menagerie of remotes for. The problem, however, is they're often complex and annoying to program, and that's enough to put most people off.

The Smart Control is one of the best-looking universal remotes, and we've seen more than we can count on our extremities. It has a weight and build quality you don't often see with these little controllers. It feels good in your hands and the buttons are large enough to press comfortably, even if you're a chunky man.
