Xsight review; score 8 out of 10 !!

Absolute Gadget

If there is one thing that upsets the missus it is remote control sprawl. There are a lot of the type "one remote to control them all" but for one reason or another the fail to live up to expectations. One for All hopes that its Xsight Touch will put paid to those fears. Most households will testify that once you get yourself a decent telly, a DVD/Blu-ray player, an amp, etc. you soon have have more plastic floating around your room than Jordan.

One for All Xsight Touch remote control

Computeractive

One For All has been making 'universal' remote controls for years, but recently it has released two high-end models, the Xsight Colour, which we looked at recently and the Xsight Touch.

The Touch has a touch-sensitive screen, similar to that on the excellent Logitech Harmony 1100. But while the Harmony costs nearly £300 the Touch costs a more reasonable £130. It has lots of physical buttons but there's also a small touch-sensitive colour screen at the top of the device. This is content-sensitive, which is to say that what's on it changes depending on what you're doing. Setting it up required installing some software on our computer. Instead of supplying a CD the company requires users to download this from the internet, but it was no trouble.

Drowing in remote controls? Get a SmartControl to help you

Universal remotes have come a long way, and One For All have been there every step of the way. If you have an array of home entertainment kit, and remote controls littered all over your house, then something like the OneForAll SmartControl (URC 7960) might help you tidy your act up.

The big selling point of the SmartControl is a system called SimpleSet. We've seen various approaches to programming universal remotes in the past, from mapping every button press, to hooking the thing up to your PC. SimpleSet lets you program the remote with 3 button presses. Essentially it uses the same quick programming option that previous One For All remotes have used and it works across major brands.

One For All Smart Control: Hard-working simpleton remote

One For All's Smart Control wants to persuade you that you've had it wrong -- universal remotes can be easy to use. Make no mistake, they're a truly great idea and offer features that are worth ditching your existing menagerie of remotes for. The problem, however, is they're often complex and annoying to program, and that's enough to put most people off.

The Smart Control is one of the best-looking universal remotes, and we've seen more than we can count on our extremities. It has a weight and build quality you don't often see with these little controllers. It feels good in your hands and the buttons are large enough to press comfortably, even if you're a chunky man.

One For All SmartControl wins test !!

The Inquirer

AS YOUR HOME THEATRE setup grows a new problem arises; how do you control the multitude of devices you have without juggling five or six different remote controls? Thankfully there are a number of cost effective solutions available with two of the more affordable ones featured here.

Universal remote controls aim to declutter your coffee table or sofa by replacing several devices with just one. There's a wide range of units available with prices to match. Manufacturers such as Universal Electronics and Philips aim for the high-end with products that offer a high degree of customisation and a price tag to make you baulk. Others such as Logitech have gone for the more attainable end of the market offering a balance between customisation and price. One For All is Universal Electronics' consumer brand and has been around for the best part of two decades. Firmly entrenched in the value-end of the market, it originally catered to those who had lost their original remote control unit. However with the Smartcontrol it's making a move into the universal remote territory allowing the consolidation of other remotes and at £30 it's nothing short of a steal.

Take control of all your home entertainment needs with this remote

It's a truth universally acknowledged that the more gadgets you buy the more remotes you need to control them with.

Ergo, unintended domestic strife and a total lack of room on your coffee table for stuff like, well, coffee.

One answer, obviously, is to stop buying so much stuff; the other - more sensible one - is to swap the multitude of remotes for one super-convergent beast that can control everything you want, without going to Click-like levels of insanity.
