Verdict
The OneForAll covers all the bases without costing you the earth. At £24.99, it won't break the bank and we found it simple and easy to use with a good quality feel. It isn't as sophisticated as Logitech's Harmony or Philips Prestigo range, but it is cheaper too.
Overall we found the SmartControl to be simple to program and offering enough to control three devices without thinking. We especially like the fact that it would control the Xbox 360 too, which might be of interest to those who want to use it to watch movies or play music, or just browse around without firing up a controller. It's a shame you don't get PS3 control (which uses a Bluetooth remote, but it will reportedly control the PS2, which we didn't test).
If you just want to reduce the number of remotes you need on a daily basis, the SmartControl will probably cover all your needs. Those with specific advanced requirements might want to look further afield

Absolute Gadget

If there is one thing that upsets the missus it is remote control sprawl. There are a lot of the type "one remote to control them all" but for one reason or another the fail to live up to expectations. One for All hopes that its Xsight Touch will put paid to those fears. Most households will testify that once you get yourself a decent telly, a DVD/Blu-ray player, an amp, etc. you soon have have more plastic floating around your room than Jordan.

One for All Xsight Touch remote control

One For All has been making 'universal' remote controls for years, but recently it has released two high-end models, the Xsight Colour, which we looked at recently and the Xsight Touch.

The Touch has a touch-sensitive screen, similar to that on the excellent Logitech Harmony 1100. But while the Harmony costs nearly £300 the Touch costs a more reasonable £130. It has lots of physical buttons but there's also a small touch-sensitive colour screen at the top of the device. This is content-sensitive, which is to say that what's on it changes depending on what you're doing. Setting it up required installing some software on our computer. Instead of supplying a CD the company requires users to download this from the internet, but it was no trouble.

Make no mistake, they're a truly great idea and offer features that are worth ditching your existing menagerie of remotes for. The problem, however, is they're often complex and annoying to program, and that's enough to put most people off.

The Smart Control is one of the best-looking universal remotes, and we've seen more than we can count on our extremities. It has a weight and build quality you don't often see with these little controllers. It feels good in your hands and the buttons are large enough to press comfortably, even if you're a chunky man.

It's a truth universally acknowledged that the more gadgets you buy the more remotes you need to control them with.

Ergo, unintended domestic strife and a total lack of room on your coffee table for stuff like, well, coffee.
